Young champ hopes to retain title

A CYCLING whizkid from Bryanston, Sandton, will be among the starlets competing when the Union Cycliste Internationale BMX World Championships starts in Copenhagen this week.
Nine-year-old Georgina Grassie will not only be racing, but she will be defending the world title she won at the ICI's championships in Pietermaritzburg last year. Before she jetted out of the country on Saturday, the Grade 4 pupil at Brescia House Primary School in Bryanston took some time to perfect her skills at the Toyota MTN cycling park in Fourways. "I am a bit nervous. I don't know, but I think I will defend my title," Georgina said after a 30-minute practice session.
She hopes to eventually ride motorbikes. For her parents, there's pride and pleasure in travelling all over to watch her compete.
"She has always been a tomboy, crazy about bikes. It's good for her health and confidence," said her dad, Charles Grassie.
In Copenhagen, Georgina will be joined by another South African, Anita Zenani, from Cape Town, who will compete in the under-13 girls group.
