Walking for Water Project

Boys measuring bracket positions.
As many of you are aware, Mrs Jennings walked 320km from Oviedo to Santiago de Compestella in northern Spain, during the August holidays. One of the goals of her walk was to raise funds for Mugwazeni Secondary School, another Eco-School near Tzaneen in the Limpopo Province. The money raised will be used to assist the school in re-establishing their vegetable garden and nursery by helping them install a rainwater harvesting system. A big thank you to all the parents and staff that have supported this project so generously.

Our first partner in this project was Marley Pipe Systems. Peter Marks and his team, from Marley Pipe Systems, arranged for all the guttering to be sponsored and they trained a group of boys at Mugwazeni Secondary School in the installation of guttering. During this training the guttering was successfully fitted to one block of classrooms and the boys were left with the necessary tools and guttering to complete the project. In addition to their sponsorship, Marley Pipe Systems arranged that P&L Hardware, based in Limpopo Province, would sponsor the tools and the ladders to successfully complete the installation of the guttering. Marley Pipe Systems have offered their on-going support of this project until it is completed. We have received news this week from the school that the boys have successfully fitted the guttering to the second classroom block. They are making fantastic progress.

The second phase in this project is to get tanks for the water to be collected in and stored. The money raised from the walk will be used to purchase these tanks. We are also hoping to get some of the tanks sponsored as the school will require approximately 60 000litres of water to water the gardens and nursery as well as ensure that the staff and children have fully functioning toilets.

It has been wonderful to see the commitment from our girls, parents, staff and the team from Marley Pipe Systems to create positive change in the lives of others in our country. Thank you to all that have got involved!
